Cape Townian born Paul Abro, is a singer songwriter whose music has been weaving it’s way into the hearts of people around the world.
Paul started classical guitar lessons at the age of 7, but soon found that his talent was in song writing. Growing up he performed his music in number of local bands but at 17 he stopped composing, as life can and did take a different direction. For 10 years Paul lived in Philadelphia, USA and studied a degree in medicine and after returned to Cape Town to start his practice. It was then that music came back to him and his life took another turn. He was invited to join a local band and as soon realised what he had missed. Being older there was suddenly no pressure. He now had the time to focus on putting together a quality album of good songs for him and other people to enjoy. In 2004 Paul released an EP called ‘Songs From A Small Settee’ that had airplay on the American College Radio circuit. This was the final deciding factor proving that he had to focus on his music.
For his album Paul chose renowned producer Chris Tait (of Tait rock fame) and recorded at Street Level Studio in Cape Town. He used well-known local musicians including Kevin Gibson on drums, Wesley Rustin and Dave Ridgeway on bass, James Stewart on piano, Tom Fox on guitar, Marc Maingard on harmonica, Rupert Mellow on accordion and Julia Jakobsen on backing vocals. Here his music came to life, a mix of jazz, pop and adult contemporary. The album was named due to Paul’s thoughts that ‘perhaps we spend our adult lives redefining ourselves in an attempt to find out way back to ourselves’ in essence ‘Another Way Of Being’.
It is Paul’s song writing ability that makes the album shine. His lyrics capture the celebration of life with love and hope, something many people have forgotten. The album simply reminds you of the happiness you should have and after listening you feel you are ready to breathe again and carry on with your day. His style and voice has been likened to Jack Johnson and Michael Franks and his influences range from James Taylor and Paul Simon. He draws from his own experiences and by watching others. It is perhaps the reason people connect to the songs so much on personal levels.
After putting the album onto a number of digital platforms the songs began to make an impact. Soon Paul was getting contacted from labels around the world wanting to release ‘Another Way of Being, the latest being from Japan. Currently his songs are being played on radio stations in Australia, UK, Hungry, France, Japan, USA and Canada.
Paul is very excited to promote ‘Another Way of Being’ to his home South Africa; a place he feels has an immense openness for artistic expression. It is being released through independent music label Runway Music. The first single to be released is ‘Angels Collide’, an uplifting song that celebrates the lessons learnt in relationships. The new music video for ‘Fireflies Lullaby’ is also getting great reviews online. He used award winning AFTA student to create a magical animated story leaving lots of room for interpretation for the child in all of us.
Paul Abros songs are inspirational. Even if life does take you down different paths, eventually you will get to where you are meant to be. It is not a coincidence that his new album is reaching out to so many fans around the world. It shows that good music is meant to be heard and can travel anywhere.
