The Balkanology parties have fast been gathering a following in Cape Town since they began in May 2006. The concept started in Europe in the late 90’s: vodka-fuelled all-night gypsy dance extravaganzas, offering an alternative to the predictable club scene in places like Berlin. The underground DJ’s (particularly DJ Shantel) and the clubs involved gained large and loyal followings for their electronic mixes of traditional folk tunes.
In Cape Town the Balkanology parties, with Dj Toby2shoes, have gathered as much of a buzz as they did in Europe (perhaps even moreso), because of the relatively small overall party scene. Capetonians love a celebration and Balkanology fits in perfectly with their love of eccentricity. Styled as Eastern European gypsy camps with caravans, bales of hay, tents with tarot and palm-readers, goats, chickens and pigs, these parties are an opportunity to dress up and go wild.
Dj Toby2shoes, a pioneer of alternative music in general in South Africa, has become the ambassador for balkan-gypsy-folk. In choosing the tracks for the Balkanology album and sequencing the tunes, he consolidates his reputation as a highly skilled, innovative Dj in general, and for this music in particular.
The final track on the album was recorded in Cape Town by a collaboration of highly talented local musicians who have come together through Balkanology. Called “The Kolo Novo Movie Band”, they include Kyla-Rose and Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground, Siya Makuzeni, Rus Nerwich, Markus Wormstorm and Grada Djeri.
As one movement of music from the first to the last track, Balkanology is an addictive, irresistable dance delight. As a celebration handed down through generations, this is a modern reflection of timeless tradition. And as a completely unique, fresh genre, it’s probably the catchiest music you’ve heard.
We are Balkanology; a Cape Town based collective representing the madness of Balkan and Gypsy music to Africa. We do this by throwing massive manic parties where DJ’s and musicians perform a fusion of Gypsy, Serbian, Macedonian, Bulagarian and Romanian melodies. It’s the biggest Balkan party in South Africa. It’s the only Balkan party in South Africa.
Our goats, tubas, clairvoyants, caravans, chickens, trumpets, violins, giant speakers… and pigs, do the best they can to deliver a dreamy, drunken Balkan chaos. With this compilation we present to you the beauty of Balkan Gypsy music, with a modern twist. Remixed, yet retaining a raw authenticity that captures the heart of the music and explores its true roots. Balkanology is here to spread the madness, a madness which at once harbours complex sorrow and yet celebrates life. Music that borders on hysteria, music that will incite lunatic dancing… and the consumption of much vodka.
